About

For the point where good intentions are no longer enough.

Plainspoken HR exists for the stage of growth when informal practices stop working reliably. We help put structure behind how people are hired, managed, supported and developed.

The problem we saw

The same organization, again and again.

Strong mission. Committed staff. Real growth. And a people side held together by borrowed handbooks, habit and decisions made under pressure.

The help available usually came in two forms: technically correct documents nobody could use, or warm conversations that changed nothing. Neither builds a workplace.

What we believe

Systems only work if people use them.

  • A policy by itself does not fix a workplace.
  • Managers need tools, not just rules.
  • Clients should get more capable, not more dependent on consultants.
  • Sometimes the right answer is less consulting, not more.

Systems, policy and workplace problem solving

“I like taking a workplace problem that feels messy and turning it into something managers can actually understand and use.”

David approaches workplace problems through structure: how a policy is written, how a process runs, what the research says and where a decision will be tested. His work spans HR strategy, policy development, employee and labour relations, compensation research, organizational analysis, accessibility and accommodation, and HR process design.

He has extensive supervisory experience in unionized healthcare and has held senior HR leadership responsibilities. His education combines employment relations with technology management, which is why he is useful when organizations want to know whether a tool will actually make managing people easier.

Lydia reads the room. Her work spans people strategy, employee relations, leadership, facilitation, inclusive workplaces and employee experience. She is good at turning a complicated workplace issue into a conversation people can actually have.

She works comfortably with employees, managers, executive teams and boards, and builds trust quickly. She received an Academic Excellence Award in her Employment Relations graduate program.

Education

  • Master of Business Administration, Washington State University
  • Undergraduate education in Business Administration and Management

Better workplaces need both good systems and good human judgment.

Most workplace problems are a systems problem and a people problem at the same time. David designs the structure. Lydia makes sure it lands with the people expected to use it. A policy that is sound but lands badly gets ignored. A conversation that builds trust but leaves nothing behind gets repeated. We do both.

How we approach client work

A few commitments.

You work with us

Clients work directly with David and Lydia, start to finish.

Scoped in writing

What we'll do and deliver is agreed in a written proposal before work begins.

Plain language

Documents should make ordinary decisions easier.

Honest about limits

We provide HR consulting, not legal advice. When you need a lawyer, we'll say so.

These are people you can actually talk to.

A short discovery call. No pitch. No obligation.
